Bangladesh: Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has recently visited his exiled mother in New Delhi, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.
Joy, who is based in the United States, arrived in India just days before Eid-ul-Azha, which was observed on June 7 this year.
Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since her Awami League-led government was ousted in August last year.
Indian officials have not made any formal statements regarding Joy’s visit.
However, a source close to the Awami League revealed that the primary reason for his trip was to spend Eid with his mother.
The same source noted that Joy is the first person to meet Hasina since her arrival in India nearly a year ago.
Joy is not expected to make any public appearances during his stay, and details about his travel itinerary remain undisclosed.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Chief Advisor Prof Muhammad Yunus, has formally requested Hasina’s extradition to face several criminal charges. Among these is an indictment from the International Crimes Tribunal, which accuses her of allegedly ordering police crackdowns on demonstrators during the July Uprising.
The extradition request has yet to receive a response from Indian authorities, and diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring countries have reportedly become strained—not only over Hasina but also alleged minority issue.
