Italian PM Meloni Likely to Visit Bangladesh in Aug to Boost Ties

Italian first female Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to make an official visit to Bangladesh in the final week of August, as both countries look to deepen cooperation in key areas and enhance bilateral relations.
Diplomatic sources have indicated that preparations are underway on both sides to ensure a successful and productive visit.
The planned trip comes amid renewed efforts by Rome to expand its engagement with Dhaka, particularly in the areas of migration, employment, and economic cooperation.
Earlier this month, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited Dhaka and conveyed Italy’s willingness to recruit more workers from Bangladesh.
He also assured that Italy would take necessary steps to promote safe and legal migration.
During discussions with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Piantedosi mentioned that Prime Minister Meloni is likely to visit Bangladesh before September.
The Italian government, he noted, is keen to “renew and re-energize” its partnership with Bangladesh.
Professor Yunus, in response, expressed Bangladesh’s readiness to collaborate with Italy in combating illegal migration and human trafficking.
He also highlighted the gratitude of the Bangladeshi community in Italy, noting their appreciation for the hospitality and opportunities offered by the host nation.
The two leaders had previously met on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in September of last year.
During that meeting, Prime Minister Meloni reiterated Italy’s support for Bangladesh’s ongoing reform efforts aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of its people.
Migration was a key topic during their talks, with both sides expressing a desire to revive negotiations for a bilateral agreement to curb irregular migration.
The discussions also focused on enhancing cooperation on migrant returns and expanding legal migration channels.
