
A mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping across the country, and its intensity increased further on Friday.
Today marked the highest recorded temperature of the year so far, with the capital also experiencing its hottest day of 2025, according to the Meteorological Department.
The ongoing heatwave has significantly disrupted daily life, prompting the authorities to issue an official heatwave alert.
The Meteorological Department warned that the heatwave could intensify within the next 72 hours, with some regions possibly facing a severe heatwave.
According to the department’s classification, temperatures ranging from 36°C to 37.9°C are considered mild heatwaves, 38°C to 39.9°C as moderate, and 40°C to 41.9°C as severe. Temperatures of 42°C and above fall under the category of extreme heatwave.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana issued the heatwave warning on behalf of the department at 2:00 PM today.
The alert stated, “The current mild to moderate heatwave over the country may persist. Between today and the next 72 hours, it may turn into a severe heatwave in some areas.”
Chuadanga recorded the highest temperature in the country today at 41.2°C. Previously, the highest temperatures of the year were recorded on March 28 in Chuadanga and on April 23 in Jashore, both at 39.8°C. The capital also recorded its highest temperature of the year today at 39.2°C.
