Earthquake Felt in Dhaka at Midnight

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Churachandpur in Manipur, India, which was felt in Dhaka and several other areas.

No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.

The tremor was felt at 2:24 AM (Bangladesh time) early Tuesday night.

According to the earthquake and volcano monitoring website Volcano Discovery, the earthquake occurred at 1:54 AM Indian Standard Time (2:24 AM Bangladesh time) on Wednesday, May 28. The epicenter was located 39 kilometers (24 miles) from Imphal, the capital of India’s Manipur state.

The earthquake had a shallow depth of 47 kilometers (29 miles), which caused the shaking to be felt strongly across a wide area.

The website further noted that because the earthquake was shallow, its impact was stronger on the surface compared to a deeper quake of the same magnitude. However, no immediate damage or casualties have been reported so far.
