Bangladesh: Shops and Shopping Malls to Close by 8 PM Nationwide Amid Energy-Saving Drive
In a move aimed at supporting ongoing electricity and fuel conservation efforts, the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association has decided that all shops and shopping malls across Bangladesh, including those in the capital Dhaka, will close by 8:00 PM.
The decision was announced on Thursday (April 2) through an official statement following a joint meeting of the association’s standing committee and the Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners Association. The initiative comes in response to the ongoing global energy crisis, which has put pressure on domestic power and fuel supplies.
According to the statement, the early closure is intended to assist the government in reducing electricity consumption and managing limited energy resources more efficiently. Authorities and business leaders believe that coordinated efforts like this will help stabilize the energy situation in the country.
However, the directive will not apply to essential services. Hotels, pharmacies, emergency service providers, and traditional kitchen markets will remain open beyond the 8:00 PM deadline to ensure uninterrupted access to daily necessities.
Bangladesh has been grappling with energy challenges in recent months due to fluctuations in global fuel supply and rising import costs.
The latest measure reflects a broader national effort to mitigate the impact of the crisis through conservation and responsible usage.
