
The Hon'ble Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, has focussed on the progress of his judicial reform agenda during a lecture at the National Defence College on Tuesday.
Addressing high-ranking military and civil officials, including foreign military officials of Brigadier General rank and above and senior civil officials of Joint Secretary rank and higher, the Chief Justice outlined the significant strides made in judicial reform since he assumed office.
During his lecture, the Chief Justice provided an in-depth overview of Bangladesh's judicial system, covering its historical evolution, the structure and hierarchy of the country's courts, and the theoretical and practical aspects of law.
He spoke on the need for the judiciary's pivotal role in upholding the rule of law, ensuring good governance, and safeguarding national security through judicial independence.
He also discussed the Supreme Court's contributions to social justice, particularly through judicial activism. Furthermore, Chief Justice Refaat Ahmed shared updates on his judicial reform roadmap, mentioning key initiatives such as the establishment of the Judicial Appointment Council, which ensures merit-based appointments to the Supreme Court, and the active role of the Supreme Judicial Council in maintaining accountability within the judiciary.
The Chief Justice reaffirmed his commitment to implementing a series of initiatives, including short-, medium-, and long-term plans, to further separate the judiciary from other branches of government and improve judicial services for the public.
