Bangladesh: Five Killed, Including Four Family Members, in Bus–Car Collision in Cumilla

At least five people, including four members of the same family, were killed after a passenger bus crashed into a private car on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Cumilla’s Burichong upazila on Thursday evening.

The fatal accident occurred in the Kalakachua area when a speeding bus rammed into the right side of a private car traveling in the same direction. The impact left the car completely mangled, killing the driver on the spot and critically injuring the passengers.

The deceased have been identified as Abdul Momin (50), his wife Jharna Begum (40), their daughter Labiba Akter (18), and their son Saif (7), all residents of Senbagh upazila in Noakhali. The car’s driver, Jamal Hossain (52), from Barishal, also lost his life in the crash.

Another passenger, 12-year-old Abrar Hossain—son of Abdul Momin—survived the incident but sustained injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at Moynamati General Hospital in Cumilla Cantonment.

According to highway police and local sources, both the bus, operated by Starline Paribahan, and the private car were heading toward Chattogram when the accident took place around 6:00 pm. The bus reportedly struck the car from behind at high speed, causing severe damage.

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Momin of Moynamati Highway Police Station confirmed the details around 8:30 pm. He stated that the bus involved in the accident has been seized, but the driver and his assistant fled the scene immediately after the crash.

Police have taken the damaged vehicles into custody and said that legal proceedings are underway. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
