The incident occurred at his Sky View residence located in the Senpara area on Thursday (May 29) at around 8:45 PM. Following the attack, army personnel were deployed to the location.
Former mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and Jatiya Party Presidium Member, Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, confirmed the incident.
He accused members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement of carrying out the attack.
Following the incident, both groups—the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiya Party activists—took opposing positions, leading to several instances of clashes and chase-counter chase between the two groups.
Earlier in the day, GM Quader had arrived in Rangpur and spoke to the media about various issues, including the interim government and the National Citizens Party (NCP).
Later in the evening, around 8 PM, leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement gathered at the Press Club premises to protest GM Quader’s presence in Rangpur.
They termed the Jatiya Party an ally of the ruling Awami League and demanded the arrest of GM Quader and a ban on the Jatiya Party. After marching through several key streets of the city, the protest rally reached Grand Hotel intersection near the BNP office. From there, the group headed towards Sky View, GM Quader’s residence, where the attack and vandalism took place.
During the chaos, a motorcycle was vandalized and set on fire. Following the attack, Jatiya Party leaders rushed to the scene and have remained there since.
A tense standoff continues between the Jatiya Party and Anti-Discrimination Student Movement activists.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ataur Rahman stated that police forces have been deployed to the area to bring the situation under control.
