5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh; Epicenter Located in Myanmar
A moderate earthquake shook Dhaka and several other regions across Bangladesh late Wednesday night, causing brief panic among residents.
According to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the tremor struck at 10:51 PM (BST) with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter was identified in the Sagaing region of Myanmar, approximately 112 kilometers north-northwest of Monywa and 75 kilometers southeast of Mawlaik.
Key Details of the Seismic Event:
Time: 10:51:47 PM (Local Time)
Magnitude: 5.1
Depth: 101 kilometers
Coordinates: 23.0411° N, 94.7268° E
The depth of the quake—over 100 kilometers underground—likely mitigated the impact, as deeper earthquakes generally cause less surface destruction than shallow ones.
Impact and Local Response
While no immediate casualties or structural damages have been reported in Bangladesh, the vibrations were strong enough to be felt clearly in high-rise buildings in the capital.
In several neighborhoods, anxious residents were seen rushing out of their homes into open spaces as a precautionary measure.
Seismologists continue to monitor the region for potential aftershocks. As of midnight, emergency services have not received any reports of significant incidents related to the tremors.
