Bangladesh: Twenty-five of the 27 people confirmed dead so far in the tragic crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft at Milestone School and College in Uttara are children, according to Professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, Special Health Adviser to the Chief Adviser.
He shared the update during a press conference at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Tuesday morning (July 22).
The remaining two deceased individuals include the pilot and a female teacher, he added.
“We are fully prepared for all types of treatment,” Dr. Sayedur Rahman said. “So far, 78 people have been admitted to various hospitals with injuries from the accident. Among them, five are in critical condition.”
Two of the patients are currently on ventilator support in the burn unit, he confirmed.
Hospital Filled with Grief and Pain
The atmosphere at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute has turned deeply sorrowful, with anguished cries echoing from the waiting areas as parents and relatives struggle to come to terms with the tragedy.
Mothers, fathers, uncles, and grandparents of the injured children were seen crying, praying, and desperately waiting for updates on their loved ones. One mother of an eighth-grade girl said through tears that her daughter is battling for her life with over 50% burn injuries.
An uncle of a third-grade student said his niece, though conscious, is experiencing severe pain and skin irritation from the burns, repeatedly saying that her body feels like it's burning all over.
Doctors say the victims are suffering from various degrees of burns, trauma, and respiratory complications due to inhalation of smoke and chemicals from the crash and subsequent fire.
As emergency teams and medical personnel continue their round-the-clock efforts to save lives, the entire nation remains gripped by shock and mourning over the horrific incident.
A Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) training aircraft crashed into the Diabari campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara on Monday, triggering panic and devastation during school hours.
Twelve minutes after takeoff, the pilot reportedly encountered a technical malfunction and attempted an emergency landing in an isolated area.
