Bangladesh, Dec 24, 2025: The profession of journalism in the south-western region of the country has become very unsafe as 16 journalists have so far been killed in the last 41years by miscreants and outlawed elements while discharging their professional duties.
Among the victims, there were five editors of regional dailies, and eleven journalists of Dhaka-based national dailies as well as local dailies.
Following each of the brutal killing, journalists organized a number of rallies and protest meetings and submitted memorandums to the respective district administrations, police administrations and Central Government, but none of the killers have been apprehended in 41 years despite assurances and promises from the authorities.
Only three or four of these killings were tried in the courts, but the accused were set free due to reportedly faulty and defective charge-sheets. There has been no progress in the remaining 12 cases, till now.
Imdadul Haque Milon (45), Sholuya correspondent of Dainik Probaho of Khulna, also general secretary of Sholuya Press Club, is the last victim who was shot dead at night on December 18 in 2025 at local Sholuya Bazaar.
Jamaluddin, Sharsa upazila correspondent of Dainik Gramer Kagoj of Jashore, is previous victim who was brutally killed on June 15 in 2012 at his native village Kashipur. Killers gouged out his eyes and cut tendon of legs to confirm his death as had strongly protested drug trafficking and smuggling through reports carried by the Gramer Kagoj.
The first to be done to death was the Editor of Dainik Runner of Jashore, Golam Mazed, on April 10 in 1984. He was brutally tortured in jail for writing against the then Martial Law Government.
On June 8 in 1996, Editor SM Alauddin of Dainik Patradut, published from Satkhira, was shot dead in his office. Saiful Alam Mukul, Editor of Dainik Runner of Jashore, died in a bomb blast on the night of August 30 in 1998, when he was returning to his Bejpara residence in Jashore town. Shamsur Rahman Kebal, an eminent journalist of this region and Special Correspondent of Dainik Janokantho, was brutally gunned down in the night of July 16 in 2004, when he was working at his desk on Jail Road, opposite the Jashore 250-bed General Hospital.
Manik Chandra Saha, a Khulna Correspondent of the English daily ‘New Age’, also a stringer of BBC Bangla Service, died in a powerful bomb blast by unidentified assailants on January 15 in 2004, near Khulna Press Club in the city.
Humayun Kabir Balu, the Editor of local daily ‘Dainik Janmobhumi’, published from Khulna, also the then incumbent President of Khulna Press Club, was brutally killed in broad day-light by a powerful bomb attack by unidentified assailants in front of his office cum residence near Shantidham Square under Sadar police station of Khulna city on June 27 in 2004.
Sheikh Belal Uddin, Khulna Bureau Chief of Bengali daily ‘Dainik Sangram’ who sustained fatal injuries in a powerful bomb attack at about 8pm on February 5 in 2005, in Khulna Press Club compound, died on February 11in 2005, while under treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
Harunur Rashid Khokon, a Senior Staff Reporter of the local daily ‘Dainik Purbanchal’ of Khulna was gunned down by unidentified assailants on March 2 in 2002, while he was on his way to office at Mujgunni area under Khalishpur thana of Khulna city.
On November in 2005, Faridpur Correspondent of Dainik Samokal, Goutam Das, was shot dead by unidentified miscreants. Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, from a local daily, was killed in 1994 and Rezaul Karim Reza, General Secretary of Jhenidah Press Club in 1995.
Other journalists who have been murdered are Editor of Dainik Darpan, Mir Elias Hossain Dilip of Jhenaidah, Md Bazrur Rahman of Din Badaler Pala of Chuadanga in 1995, Nahar Ali of Dumuria Correspondent of Dainik Anirvan of Khulna in 2001, and Belal Hossain, Correspondent of Dainik Janabani in 2006.
But the fact remains that none of these murder cases were properly investigated by the police and the killers are still at large.

দেশের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমাঞ্চলে সাংবাদিকতা পেশা এক ভয়াবহ ও অনিরাপদ পরিস্থিতির মুখে দাঁড়িয়েছে। গত ৪১ বছরে এই অঞ্চলে পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালন করতে গিয়ে চরমপন্থী ও সন্ত্রাসীদের হাতে প্রাণ হারিয়েছেন অন্তত ১৬ জন সাংবাদিক। এর মধ্যে রয়েছেন ৫ জন সম্পাদক এবং ১১ জন জাতীয় ও স্থানীয় দৈনিকের সংবাদকর্মী।
সবশেষ গত ১৮ ডিসেম্বর ২০২৫ তারিখ রাতে খুলনার ডুমুরিয়া উপজেলার চিলুয়া বাজারে সন্ত্রাসীদের গুলিতে নিহত হন দৈনিক প্রবাহের চিলুয়া প্রতিনিধি এবং চিলুয়া প্রেসক্লাবের সাধারণ সম্পাদক ইমদাদুল হক মিলন (৪৫)। এই হত্যাকাণ্ডের মধ্য দিয়ে দীর্ঘ চার দশকের রক্তক্ষয়ী তালিকায় যুক্ত হলো আরও একটি নাম।
বিচারহীনতার দীর্ঘ ইতিহাস
প্রতিটি হত্যাকাণ্ডের পর সাংবাদিক সমাজ রাজপথে নেমেছেন, স্মারকলিপি দিয়েছেন এবং প্রশাসনের পক্ষ থেকে বারবার বিচারের আশ্বাস দেওয়া হয়েছে। কিন্তু বাস্তবতা অত্যন্ত হতাশাজনক।
গত ৪১ বছরে একজন খুনিও চূড়ান্তভাবে শাস্তির আওতায় আসেনি। মাত্র ৩-৪টি মামলার বিচারকাজ শুরু হলেও পুলিশের ত্রুটিপূর্ণ ও দুর্বল চার্জশিটের কারণে আসামিরা আদালত থেকে মুক্তি পেয়ে গেছে। বাকি ১২টি মামলার তদন্ত বা বিচার প্রক্রিয়ায় কোনো দৃশ্যমান অগ্রগতি নেই।
নির্মমতার শিকার যারা
এই অঞ্চলের সাংবাদিক হত্যার তালিকায় প্রথম নাম যশোরের দৈনিক রানার-এর সম্পাদক গোলাম মাজেদ। ১৯৮৪ সালের ১০ এপ্রিল তাকে হত্যা করা হয়। তৎকালীন সামরিক আইনের বিরুদ্ধে লেখার অপরাধে তাকে জেলে নিয়ে অমানবিক নির্যাতন করা হয়েছিল।

এস এম আলাউদ্দিন (সম্পাদক, দৈনিক পত্রদূত, সাতক্ষীরা): ১৯৯৬ সালের ৮ জুন নিজ কার্যালয়ে তাকে গুলি করে হত্যা করা হয়।
সাইফুল আলম মুকুল (সম্পাদক, দৈনিক রানার, যশোর): ১৯৯৮ সালের ৩০ আগস্ট রাতে বাড়ি ফেরার পথে বোমা হামলায় তিনি নিহত হন।
শামসুর রহমান কেবল (বিশেষ প্রতিনিধি, দৈনিক জনকণ্ঠ): ২০০৪ সালের ১৬ জুলাই রাতে যশোর জেল রোডে নিজ কার্যালয়ে কাজ করার সময় তাকে গুলি করে হত্যা করা হয়।
মানিক সাহা (খুলনা প্রতিনিধি, নিউ এজ ও বিবিসি): ২০০৪ সালের ১৫ জানুয়ারি খুলনা প্রেসক্লাবের অদূরে শক্তিশালী বোমা হামলায় তিনি নিহত হন।
হুমায়ুন কবির বালু (সম্পাদক, দৈনিক জন্মভূমি ও সভাপতি, খুলনা প্রেসক্লাব): ২০০৪ সালের ২৭ জুন শান্তধাম মোড়ে নিজ কার্যালয়ের সামনে প্রকাশ্য দিবালোকে বোমা হামলায় তিনি প্রাণ হারান।
শেখ বেলাল উদ্দিন (ব্যুরো প্রধান, দৈনিক সংগ্রাম): ২০০৫ সালের ৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি খুলনা প্রেসক্লাব চত্বরে বোমা হামলায় আহত হন এবং ১১ ফেব্রুয়ারি চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় মারা যান।
জামাল উদ্দিন (শার্শা প্রতিনিধি, দৈনিক গ্রামের কাগজ): ২০১২ সালের ১৫ জুন মাদক পাচারের বিরুদ্ধে সংবাদ প্রকাশের জেরে তাকে নৃশংসভাবে হত্যা করা হয়। সন্ত্রাসীরা তার চোখ উপড়ে ফেলে এবং পায়ের রগ কেটে মৃত্যু নিশ্চিত করে।
এছাড়াও হারুনুর রশীদ খোকন (২০০২), গৌতম দাস (২০০৫), আব্দুল গাফফার চৌধুরী (১৯৯৪), রেজাউল করিম রেজা (১৯৯৫), মীর ইলিয়াস হোসেন দিলীপ, মো. বজলুর রহমান (১৯৯৫), নাহার আলী (২০০১) এবং বেলাল হোসেন (২০০৬) সন্ত্রাসীদের হাতে প্রাণ হারিয়েছেন।
