Maradona's Medical Team on Trial for Alleged Negligence in His Death

The long-awaited trial of the medical team responsible for treating Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has begun in Buenos Aires.
The 60-year-old Maradona passed away from a heart attack at his home in 2020 while recovering from brain surgery earlier that month. Prosecutors accuse the medical staff of negligence, claiming his death could have been avoided.
The defendants, including a neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, medical coordinator, nursing coordinator, doctor, and night nurse, face charges of "homicide with possible intent" and risk prison sentences ranging from 8 to 25 years if convicted.
In the opening statement, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari emphasized that the medical team failed in their duties, describing the scene of Maradona's death as a "horror theatre." Investigators have classified the case as culpable homicide, stating the accused were aware of the severity of Maradona's condition but did not take adequate steps to save him.
The trial is a pursuit of justice not only for Maradona's family but also for his fans and the people of Argentina, seeking accountability for the death of one of football's greatest icons.
