India Crush Pakistan by 61 Runs to Reach T20 World Cup Super Eight
Defending champions India national cricket team delivered a commanding performance against arch-rivals Pakistan national cricket team, sealing a 61-run victory in their Group A clash to book a place in the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Playing at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday, India posted a competitive 175 for 7 after being asked to bat. Opener Ishan Kishan led the charge with a blistering 77 off 40 deliveries, setting the tone with aggressive stroke play during the powerplay overs.
India Post Strong Total Despite Spin Pressure
Pakistan opted for an unusual strategy by introducing spin early in the innings. Captain Salman Ali Agha opened the bowling himself and struck an early blow, trapping Abhishek Sharma leg-before-wicket. Despite Pakistan’s effort to control the run flow with multiple spinners in the powerplay, India managed to reach 52 for 1 in the first six overs.
Kishan continued his attacking approach before falling to Saim Ayub. At the halfway stage, India were well-placed at 92 for 2. Ayub briefly swung momentum back in Pakistan’s favor with quick wickets, finishing with figures of 3 for 25. However, contributions from captain Suryakumar Yadav (32) and Shivam Dube (27) helped India finish strongly, even if they narrowly missed the 200-run mark.
Pakistan Collapse Under Pressure
In reply, Pakistan’s chase faltered almost immediately. India’s pace attack dismantled the top order, reducing Pakistan to 13 for 3 within the first two overs.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya removed opener Sahibzada Farhan for a duck, while fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah dismissed both Ayub and Salman in a decisive over. Former captain Babar Azam also departed cheaply, leaving Pakistan struggling at 38 for 4 after the powerplay.
Usman Khan attempted to stabilize the innings with a fighting 44, but his dismissal—stumped off Axar Patel—effectively ended Pakistan’s hopes. The team was eventually bowled out for 114 in 18 overs, handing India their third consecutive win in the group stage.
Off-Field Tensions Add to Rivalry
The high-profile encounter carried additional tension, with both captains notably skipping the customary handshake at the toss. Pakistan had earlier reconsidered a brief proposal to boycott the match, ensuring the much-anticipated fixture went ahead as scheduled.
With this comprehensive victory, India advance confidently to the Super Eight round, reinforcing their status as one of the tournament favorites.
