Fatty liver disease is becoming a serious global health concern due to negligence and unhealthy lifestyle choices, warned Prof Dr Mian Mashhud Ahmad, Senior Gastroenterologist at Labaid Specialized Hospital, Dhaka.
In an exclusive interview with The Reporter 24, he emphasized that more than 30 to 40 percent of the population suffer from some form of fatty liver, making it a widespread issue in Bangladesh, Asia, Europe, and the West.
Dr. Ahmad, who previously served as Professor & Head of Gastroenterology at Dhaka Medical College & Hospital, attributed the rising cases to a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and excessive consumption of junk food, fatty and fried items, as well as high-sugar and high-salt diets.
He noted that many elites suffer from this condition due to their reliance on restaurant food, frequent feasts, and rich meals.
“In Bangladesh, most elites indulge in fatty and sugary foods at social gatherings, unlike in many developed countries where people are more conscious about healthy eating,” he stated.
He also pointed out that hotels and restaurants rarely offer healthier alternatives such as wholemeal bread, vegetable salads, or non-fried fish and chicken.
Instead, fried and fatty foods dominate the menu, making it difficult for people to maintain a balanced diet.
Dr. Ahmad stressed the importance of regular exercise and healthier eating habits to combat the growing threat of fatty liver disease.
