EU Reaffirms Full Support for Chief Justice’s Reform Initiatives

The European Union (EU) has expressed its full support for the Chief Justice of Bangladesh’s judicial independence and reform initiatives.
In an official statement posted on the EU in Bangladesh Facebook page, the delegation stated, “The EU supports the independence and efficiency of Bangladesh’s judiciary. The Bangladesh Supreme Court is working with UNDP, and we stand by our partners. We uphold universal values and support the Chief Justice and the interim government’s reform objectives.”
The statement follows the Regional Seminar on Judicial Independence and Efficiency in Bangladesh, held on February 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Mymensingh District Council Auditorium. The event was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Supreme Court and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bangladesh.
The seminar brought together judicial officials from various districts within the Mymensingh Division to discuss strategies for strengthening judicial independence and improving the efficiency of the legal system.
The discussions highlighted ongoing reform efforts and international cooperation in ensuring a fair and effective judiciary in Bangladesh.
EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation Michael Miller, attended the event, underscoring the EU’s commitment to supporting judicial reforms.
Bangladesh’s Chief Justice Dr. Syed Rifaat Ahmed, presided over the event as the chief guest, emphasizing the importance of judicial independence in upholding the rule of law.
Also present were Justice Farah Mahbub of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and UNDP Bangladesh’s Resident Representative, Stefan Liller, who shared insights on the role of international partnerships in strengthening judicial institutions.
The seminar served as a platform for legal professionals to exchange views on judicial efficiency and best practices.
