Bangladesh General Election in December Subject to Reforms, Prof Yunus

Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Bangladesh Interim Government, has stated that the general elections in Bangladesh could take place between December 2025 and March 2026, depending on the swift implementation of reforms aimed at ensuring free and fair elections.
In an interview with the BBC at his official residence in Dhaka, Yunus explained the election timeline, saying, "If reforms are completed quickly, December could be possible for elections. If the process takes longer, it may require a few more months."
Asked about law and order, he said, "In comparison to last year, things seem better, but what we’re experiencing now is not vastly different from other times."
Yunus made it clear that the participation of the Awami League in the elections remains uncertain. He stated, "They [the Awami League] have to decide if they want to do it; I cannot decide for them. The election commission will determine who is eligible to participate."
His remarks underscore that the final decision on participation lies with the party and the Election Commission.
Further, Yunus emphasized the dire economic situation in Bangladesh, describing it as "a shattered economy, a devastated economy."
He likened the country’s current state to the aftermath of a long-term disaster, saying, "It feels like a terrible tornado has been through the country for 16 years, and now we're trying to rebuild."
Yunus acknowledged the difficulties Bangladesh faces, attributing some of the ongoing challenges to the legacy of the previous government under Sheikh Hasina.
While many continue to protest, demanding accountability for her administration’s actions, Yunus is focused on guiding the country toward the planned elections, with the timing contingent on the progress of essential reforms.
