A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and three Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been detained by law enforcement authorities.
They were taken into custody on Friday night (February 7) from different police units and later brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) office.
According to police sources, SP Asaduzzaman, Commandant of the In-Service Training Center in Nilphamari, was first detained by Rangpur Metropolitan Police before being transferred to Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.
On the same day, former Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, DIG Molla Nazrul Islam, who was attached to the Sarda Police Academy in Rajshahi, was also detained. Rajshahi district police facilitated his arrest before he was sent to Dhaka.
Additionally, SP Abdul Mannan and SP Abul Hasnat, both attached to Rangpur Range, were detained by Rangpur Metropolitan Police.
Sources indicate that DIG Molla Nazrul Islam, who previously held key positions in Gazipur Metropolitan Police and Dhaka’s Detective Branch, had faced multiple allegations, including extrajudicial actions.
Meanwhile, SP Abul Hasnat, a 27th BCS batch officer, came under heavy criticism for his political remarks while serving as Superintendent of Police in Bagerhat during the 2024 elections and student protests.
SP Abdul Mannan, who previously served in Cumilla and Sylhet, had also faced allegations of excessive force during elections and student movements.
Reports suggest that while serving in Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), he was accused of staging multiple counterterror operations.
Similarly, SP Asaduzzaman, a 25th BCS batch officer, was widely criticized for his role as Superintendent of Police in Noakhali, where he was accused of using excessive force during elections and student protests.
Following the July-August political upheaval, legal cases were reportedly filed against all four officials. Since then, they had been reassigned to various police units before their detention.
A senior official of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police confirmed the arrests, stating that DIG Nazrul and several other officers had been taken into custody.
