LOS ANGELES — The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, recognizing the finest achievements in American television. Hosted by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay, the main ceremony features a streamlined lineup of 19 categories—down from 26 in previous years—to allow more time for entertainment and speeches.

Key Frontrunners & Nominations Overview

Medical drama The Pitt enters the night as the overall leader with 25 nominations, seeking to defend its Outstanding Drama Series title alongside eight individual acting nods, including lead actor Noah Wyle.

In the comedy categories, Hacks heads into its fifth and final season with 24 nominations. Star Jean Smart could tie the all-time record of eight acting Emmy wins—currently held by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman—if she secures a win alongside co-star Hannah Einbinder.

High-Profile Omissions and Eligibility Rules

  • Why Heated Rivalry Is Missing: Despite its viral popularity, the hockey romance starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams received zero nominations due to strict Television Academy rules. As a fully Canadian-financed production without U.S. co-production partners, it was ineligible for the Primetime Emmys and will instead compete at the International Emmys in November.

  • Disappointing Final Runs for Cultural Hits: The final season of Stranger Things was entirely shut out of major categories, landing only seven technical nominations. Similarly, the final season of Euphoria managed just one major acting nomination, for former winner Zendaya.

Ceremony Changes & How to Watch

To revamp the broadcast schedule, categories such as Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series were presented ahead of time at the Creative Arts Emmys (where Linda Cardellini and David Harbour claimed honors for DTF St. Louis). Furthermore, Best Talk Series and Best Scripted Variety Series have officially merged into a single category: Outstanding Variety Series.

  • Broadcast Time: Monday at 5:00 PM PT / 8:00 PM ET.

  • United States: Live coverage on NBC and streaming on Peacock.

  • International Viewing: Live digital coverage available overnight on major international news portals.
